ACTS Completes Comprehensive Pavement Testing and Evaluation at King Abdulaziz International Airport

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia — Advanced Construction Technology Services (ACTS) is proud to announce the successful completion of a comprehensive pavement testing and evaluation project at King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah, one of the region's busiest aviation hubs.

This milestone project underscores ACTS' strong technical capabilities and proven expertise in delivering advanced airport pavement investigations that meet international standards and adhere to recognized industry best practices.

Project Overview

The scope of work encompassed a rigorous combination of nondestructive and destructive testing methodologies designed to provide airport authorities with a complete assessment of pavement structural integrity and functional performance. The evaluation leveraged state-of-the-art equipment and internationally recognized analysis frameworks to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance.

 

 

Technical Scope and Methodologies

ACTS deployed a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate the airport's pavement systems, including:

Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD) Testing

HWD testing was conducted to measure pavement deflection response under dynamic loads, simulating actual aircraft loading conditions. This data is critical for assessing the structural capacity and remaining service life of pavement sections.

Pavement Classification Rating (PCR) Analysis

Using the Federal Aviation Administration's FAARFIELD software, ACTS performed PCR evaluations to determine the load-bearing capacity of the pavement and ensure it meets the operational requirements for current and future aircraft types.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Surveys

GPR technology was employed to conduct nondestructive subsurface imaging, identifying layer thicknesses, voids, moisture intrusion, and other anomalies that could compromise pavement performance.

Pavement Condition Index (PCI) Evaluation

ACTS utilized the Laser Crack Measurement System (LCMS2) in conjunction with PAVER software to systematically assess surface distresses such as cracking, rutting, and surface deformation. The PCI methodology provides a standardized measure of pavement condition, facilitating data-driven maintenance and rehabilitation decisions.

Pavement Roughness Assessment

A Road Surface Profiler (RSP) was deployed to measure the International Roughness Index (IRI), a key indicator of ride quality and user comfort. This metric is essential for assessing functional performance and planning surface improvement interventions.

Geotechnical Investigations

Subsurface geotechnical investigations were conducted to evaluate soil conditions, subgrade support, and foundation characteristics. This data informs pavement design validation and future expansion planning.

Comprehensive Performance Evaluation

Together, these integrated testing activities provided airport authorities with a holistic understanding of both the structural integrity and functional performance of KAIA's pavement systems. The findings enable evidence-based decision-making for maintenance prioritization, rehabilitation strategies, and long-term asset management planning.
